5 Signs Your Gut May Need Attention

September 2026

Your digestive system plays an important role in how you eat, digest food and absorb nutrients. Occasional bloating or indigestion can happen to anyone, but repeated or persistent digestive symptoms should not be ignored. Here are five common signs that your digestive system may need some attention.

1. Frequent Bloating

Feeling bloated or unusually full after meals is common, but frequent bloating can sometimes be associated with constipation, eating too quickly, certain food intolerances, or conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

  • Eat slowly and chew food well
  • Avoid very large meals
  • Limit carbonated drinks
  • Keep a food-and-symptom diary to identify individual triggers

2. Frequent Constipation

Passing hard stools, straining, or having bowel movements less often than usual can be signs of constipation. A low-fibre diet, inadequate fluid intake, low physical activity and some medications can contribute to constipation.

  • Add fibre gradually through fruits, vegetables, whole grains and pulses
  • Drink adequate fluids
  • Stay physically active
  • Don't ignore the urge to pass stool

3. Frequent Acidity or Heartburn

A burning sensation in the chest or upper abdomen, sour taste in the mouth, or discomfort after meals may occur with acid reflux or GERD. Persistent or frequent heartburn should be evaluated by a doctor.

  • Eat smaller meals
  • Avoid lying down soon after eating
  • Have dinner 2–3 hours before bedtime
  • Identify foods that trigger your symptoms
  • Limit excessive oily or spicy foods if they worsen your symptoms

4. Recurrent Diarrhea or Loose Motions

Occasional loose stools can occur because of infections or dietary changes. However, recurrent or persistent diarrhea may require medical evaluation. Possible causes include infections, food intolerance, IBS, inflammatory bowel disease and certain medications.

  • Maintain adequate hydration
  • Choose simple, easily tolerated foods during episodes
  • Avoid foods that clearly worsen your symptoms
  • Seek medical advice if symptoms persist or are severe

5. Excessive Gas or Changes in Bowel Habits

Gas is a normal part of digestion, but a noticeable or persistent change in bowel habits, excessive gas, abdominal discomfort or alternating constipation and diarrhea may indicate that something needs attention. Your symptoms may be influenced by your diet, eating habits, stress, medications or an underlying digestive condition.

  • Eat meals at regular times
  • Eat slowly
  • Increase fibre gradually rather than suddenly
  • Stay physically active
  • Keep track of foods that consistently trigger symptoms

When Should You See a Doctor?

Not every digestive symptom means there is a serious problem. However, persistent, recurrent or worsening symptoms deserve medical attention. See a healthcare professional if you experience digestive symptoms along with:

  • Blood in the stool
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Persistent vomiting
  • Severe or persistent abdominal pain
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Persistent diarrhea or constipation
  • Significant abdominal swelling
  • Black, tarry stools

Early evaluation can help identify the underlying cause and guide appropriate treatment. A gastroenterologist and clinical dietitian can help determine whether your symptoms are related to your diet, lifestyle or an underlying digestive condition.
